Daniel Pipeleers authored over 300 publications in the field of diabetes, with focus on beta cell biology, pathology and therapy. His team has a long track record in using cell biologic and physiologic knowledge as basis for undertaking and evaluating methods for beta cell replacement, first in animal models and then in combination with clinical studies in type 1 diabetes patients. In this context and perspective, he initiated and coordinates the BetaCellTherapy consortium which began its human islet cell transplant program in 1995 and which is now starting clinical implants with human stem-cell derived preparations. This international consortium has received support by the European Union since 1990 and by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since 2002.
